Monola Granary

The scenic honeymoon destination of Jean Sibelius

In 1892 composer Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino come to Monola, on the shore of Lake Pielinen on their honeymoon journey. The granary where they stayed is nowadays open for public in summers. Other travellers had occasionally stayed overnight in the granary before the visit of the Sibelius, but thanks to these famous visitors the granary has been restored and it now continues to serve visitors and offers them a glimpse of the way of life over hundred years ago.

Echos of Monola

The summer in Monola was productive for Sibelius. He composed several songs there and the beautiful views to Lake Pielinen from the granary inspired also several symphonies. Sibelius and his work is celebrated during the annual Monola Festival.
